So, you just got your hands on the No. 1460 lathe – congratulations! Before you dive into your first project, it's important to familiarize yourself with the setup and maintenance of your new equipment. Let's go through some key points to help you get started on the right foot.

Unpacking and Setup

When unpacking your lathe, take care to avoid damaging any finished surfaces. Whether you're mounting it on a No. 1463 lathe stand or on a bench, ensure that the bed is level. Check for any twists or warpage periodically and make necessary adjustments to maintain the stability of your lathe.

Motor Mounting

You have the flexibility to mount the motor below the bench's top, on the lower shelf, or behind the headstock according to your convenience. For users of the No. 1453 lathe stand, the holes for mounting the motors are partially pre-drilled, allowing you to customize the setup to suit your specific requirements.

Headstock Maintenance

The headstock is crucial to the functionality of your lathe, and proper maintenance is key to its longevity. The use of greaseal ball bearings reduces the risk of common issues related to lubrication, ensuring that your lathe can be used consistently for years without trouble. If you ever need to replace the endless belts or adjust the spindle and pulley, be mindful not to disturb the preloaded bearings to maintain the spindle's rigidity and smooth operation.

The tailstock quill can be adjusted using the ball crank handle and locked securely with the ball handle DP-11. Regularly lubricate the tailstock bearing cap for smooth operation. Also, ensure that center alignment is maintained and make use of the designated zero mark for accurate positioning. The Tool Support Base features a new design that allows for rotation, vertical adjustment, and secure clamping to the lathe bed. Familiarize yourself with the operation of the tool support and ensure that it locks securely for safe use.

By understanding these key points and taking the time to set up and maintain your lathe properly, you can ensure a smooth and enjoyable experience with your new equipment.
